Determined to conquer the earth and act as the sole ruler, closed Loki from Asgard, the foster brother of Thor, an alliance with the titan conqueror Thanos via his servant The Other. In exchange for the Tesseract, a cube-shaped container of the Space Stone, Loki received an army of Chitauri, a cybernetically enhanced alien species with a collective consciousness. Originally under the protection of the Asgardians and stored in Odin's Vault, became the Tesseract Loki's key to a large-scale invasion.

Loki teleported to the S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, where he took control over Clint Barton (Hawkeye) due to his fighting skills and Erik Selvig, a scientist with knowledge about the Tesseract.
