Loki struck a bargain with Thanos: in exchange for the Tesseract, he received an army of Chitauri. A portal opened above Stark Tower and the invasion poured into New York. It was the first time the Avengers fought together. Thor flew to the top of the Chrysler Building and used the lightning rod to charge Mjölnir for a strike into the portal.
