What a playmat is for
A playmat gives your play area a fixed layout and keeps your cards off the table: no moisture, no crumbs, no edges scraping against wood. The rubber bottom stays put wherever you lay it, and the fabric top lets you pick up your cards without having to pick at them. At tournaments, bringing your own mat is standard practice.
What's on it
The Japanese name is ピカチュウ大集合 — literally “Pikachu, All Together”. The mat is covered in Pikachu in various poses overlapping each other, and that crowded look is exactly the point: you're not looking at one big Pikachu but a whole plaza full of them.
Half mat or full mat
A half mat of 58 × 30 cm covers your side of the table; your opponent lays down their own mat next to it. That's the standard in Japan, and it works perfectly well at tournaments in Europe too. A full mat covers both sides and is mainly handy if you play at home with two regular players.
Another Japanese mat is the one with Arceus. From the anniversary series, there's the 25th Anniversary playmat.
