Why Japanese sleeves are different

A Japanese pack contains 64 sleeves, not 65. That's because a Japanese deck holds 60 cards, leaving exactly four extra for prize cards or replacements. Japanese sleeves are also cut a fraction tighter than Western ones, which makes them nice as inner sleeves under a second layer — but if you want to use them as the outer layer at a tournament, stick to one brand for your whole deck so the backs can't be told apart.

Where the name comes from

Baby blue eyes is the English name for nemophila, a small sky-blue flower that's planted across entire fields in Japan and draws crowds of visitors there every spring. The design places Piplup right in the middle of that blue — and that's no coincidence, since the flower's color is exactly that of the penguin.

Why this is a design line, not a set

These sleeves aren't tied to any card set. Alongside its set accessories, the Pokémon Center releases its own design lines, in small runs that usually last only one season. Webshops often file them under a set name, but that's a shelf, not an origin.
