Matte means smooth shuffling
The matte back has a light texture, which keeps the sleeves from sticking together and lets your deck shuffle smoothly. Added bonus: matte barely reflects, so your cards stay readable under bright venue lighting.
PVC-free, and why that matters
These sleeves are made of polypropylene and contain no PVC. Over time, PVC can release plasticizers, and those are exactly what damages cards. Acid-free and PVC-free material is why you can leave a card in here for years.
Black as a tournament color
At a tournament, every sleeve in your deck must be identical and nothing may be visible through them. An opaque dark color is the safest choice for that, and black is also the color that's easiest to restock if a sleeve gets damaged.
