Beyond the Gates is the core set of Altered — the starting point of the game, and therefore the set you begin with. After the magical storm known as the Confluence, imagined worlds have merged with ours, and you set out with a hero and their companion to restore the balance.
What's in a booster?
Each booster contains 12 cards: 1 hero, 3 rares and 8 commons. On top of that there's a token or foiler card (roughly 75% chance of a token, 25% of a foiler). One of the rares can be replaced by a Unique — on average about one in eight boosters, or 12.5%.
Why Uniques are special
A Unique is exactly what the name says: a card with its own, distinct combination of attributes. That's why people buy these boosters individually and not just by the box — every pack is a chance.
Good to know
Equinox has ended the Altered project and shut down its digital services, including the app you could use to scan cards. The physical cards remain fully playable: the player community continues the game under the name Altered Re:Union, including on Board Game Arena. Source: the announcement on altered.gg.
