Why a playmat changes how you play
On a bare tabletop, cards lie flat and smooth against the wood, and the only way to lift them is to slide your nail under the edge — exactly how edges get damaged. The 2 mm cushioning of a mat gives way, so you can pick up a card with your fingertip. The anti-slip bottom keeps the mat itself in place, even if someone bumps into it during a long game.
What the stitched edge does
The edge is stitched flat instead of finished thick. That sounds like a detail, but it's the difference between cards sliding smoothly off the mat and cards catching behind the edge every time.
Other play accessories: the Gamegenic Token Holder.
