The Great Wall is an asymmetric worker/soldier placement board game with engine-building elements and an AI (the Mongol Horde) that attacks constantly. Players sometimes need to work together to defeat it. This large board game is from Awaken Realms .
Game overview
Players control ancient Chinese clans building the Great Wall and holding off Mongol invaders. Everyone plays to win (by earning Honor = VP), but cooperation is sometimes needed to stop the horde. Each clan is asymmetric through its leader (resources, starting workers, and units), and these differences grow further through advisors with unique abilities.
Game phases
Production – Players simultaneously choose orders via face-down cards and then determine execution order via the Tea Track. This revolves around worker placement: gathering resources, building armies, hiring advisors, or generating extra income. Some actions are only carried out once all work spots are filled, which requires cooperation.
Wall defense – Players send their soldiers, archers, and cavalry to the Mongol Horde at three wall sections. Placing units grants bonuses. If a wall section is breached (the horde is stronger than the defense), all players suffer negative effects.
Building the wall – Players can spend resources to extend the wall and earn victory points by doing so.
Throughout the game, players build their own engine based on their clan advantages and influence each other across all phases to earn the most Honor points.
